More tourists are flocking to our shores, but accommodation has not kept up with this century’s growth, statistics suggest.
According to Statistics New Zealand,
1.9 million people came to New Zealand on holiday in the year to July 31, almost double the number from back in 2002, when holiday makers first hit 1 million a year.

But since the start of the 21st century, the number of hotels, motels, holiday parks and hostels in operation have hardly lifted.
Compared to 2001, we have a few hundred more backpackers and motels.

The number of hotels and camping sites have remained mostly stagnant over 16 years.
Since 2013, the tourism industry has blown the whistle on accommodation providers, saying hotel builds need to hurry up to boost the economy.
