There’s no secret to surviving a public controversy, you just have to be strong and get through, says New Zealand First candidate Shane Jones.
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei stepped down earlier this month, saying the scrutiny of her family since she revealed she committed benefit fraud has been “unbearable”.
“I don’t want to sound too casual, I didn’t follow too much of the Metiria drama, but once you go through those things, which is a type of a public humiliation, then you’re no doubt thinking, Jonesy, why are you going back into public life,” Jones said on MÄori TV’s Media Take programme.
In 2008 the former Labour Cabinet minister decided to grant Chinese billionaire Bill Liu citizenship, against officials’ advice. The case blew up in 2013 when Liu appeared in court, charged with passport fraud. He was cleared, but was demoted by Labour leader David Shearer.
