How many Kiwis are happy making online transactions?

Most older millennials are handing over their credit card details with ease for online shopping, figures show.

According to Statistics New Zealand, 80 per cent of New Zealanders aged 25 to 34 years old reported feeling safe making online transactions last year.

The next highest bracket were those aged 35 to 44 years, followed by 15 to 24-year-olds.

From 45 years onwards there was a steady decline in trust in online shopping, though the majority of those 75 and older still felt safe buying online.

Online shopping security tips include verifying websites through search engines, checking that the web address on a payment site starts with “https” and has a padlock symbol on the address bar, and avoiding unsecured wi-fi.
If you’re shopping from a lesser-known e-commerce website, you should verify its trustworthiness by Googling the website’s name and the word “scam.”
The trust that consumers have for shopping online has translated into enormous growth in e-commerce. Online spending is growing almost four times as fast as traditional spending habits.
However, it accounts for only 7.4 per cent of last year’s annual retail sales, Statistics New Zealand found.
A number of decades-old brick and mortar stores have closed recently, citing trouble keeping up with online stores that do not have to field the overhead costs of running a physical store.
