Those shaken most by last year’s Kaikoura earthquake are the most likely to feel they need to be proactive about home repairs.
Wellington and the South Island, excluding Canterbury had the highest number of people reporting their homes were in need of “immediate or extensive maintenance”, That is about 8 per cent of those surveyed in the area.
The two areas were followed by Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, and Manawatu-Whanganui regions at seven per cent, while Canterbury and Auckland had the least people worried about immediate repairs at six per cent.
The chart was based on a survey of 12,000 homes over the past year to April.

Wellington mayor Justin Lester’s call to action for heritage building owners in the aftermath of the November earthquake appears to have resonated with homeowners.
“We have an incredible opportunity to move at great pace and take quick action and lead. We shouldn’t be quibbling about where the money should come from, we just need to get on with it and do the work,” he said.
