New Zealand’s safest worker is someone at a desk in Wellington

People working in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay, sports professionals, dancers and outdoor adventure operators are most at risk of work-related injuries.

But if you work in Wellington, particularly in the financial and insurance industries, your low-risk office environment likely keeps you safe.

Statistics New Zealand said on Thursday arts and recreation workers had the highest rate of injury last year.

This industry included categories such as sports professionals, dancers, and outdoor adventure operators.

Which region has more overnight options?

You better get in line for accommodation in Gisborne because statistics reveal there are fewer than 100 options.
Last year Gisborne had the smallest number of businesses operating in the accommodation industry.
It found Nelson and Taranaki were low on bed offers too.
The capital, Wellington, was in the middle with more overnight options than Whanganui, but less than Northland and Otago.
Canterbury and Auckland topped the list, with Canterbury having close to 800 accommodation businesses open in 2016.
Canterbury’s numerous options could be partly the result of housing construction workers amidst Christchurch’s reconstruction build.
Add food businesses to the numbers, and
Auckland trumps Canterbury.

Risk of house price recovery means lending limits should stay in place: RBNZ

The risk of a resurgence in the housing market means lending restrictions should be left in place for some time, the Reserve Bank says.

In speech to mark the end of his five years as governor, Graeme Wheeler outlined what it might take for the central bank to begin loan to value ratio restrictions (LVRs) on residential housing.

The rules limit the amount of highly leveraged lending banks can have in their residential mortgage portfolio.

Amid signs that the housing market is turning, Prime Minister Bill English made pointed comments earlier this month that the Reserve Bank should outline what needed to happen for the rules to be relaxed or removed.

Overweight driver standowns at Fonterra a bigger industry issue – experts

Fonterra’s decision to stand-down overweight truck drivers is a much wider issue in the trucking industry, and maybe other industries also, experts say.

Fonterra said on Tuesday that some of its drivers – understood to be two – would be offered alternative duties because they were much heavier than the weight safety ratings on their driver’s seats safely allowed.

The company also said that 50 of its drivers weighed in between 140 kilograms and 150kg, the seat weight maximums on its two main types of tanker.

Road Transport Forum chief executive Ken Shirley said that Fonterra’s situation was not new, and that there had been court cases in New Zealand and Australia previously over the matter.

More backpackers, fewer hotels, for increasing visitor numbers

More tourists are flocking to our shores, but accommodation has not kept up with this century’s growth, statistics suggest.
According to Statistics New Zealand,
1.9 million people came to New Zealand on holiday in the year to July 31, almost double the number from back in 2002, when holiday makers first hit 1 million a year.
But since the start of the 21st century, the number of hotels, motels, holiday parks and hostels in operation have hardly lifted.
Compared to 2001, we have a few hundred more backpackers and motels.
The number of hotels and camping sites have remained mostly stagnant over 16 years.
Since 2013, the tourism industry has blown the whistle on accommodation providers, saying hotel builds need to hurry up to boost the economy.
