MPI said SOS Hydration needs more sugar, a dietitian said less salt

Drink maker SOS Hydration could be fined $100,000 by a government department for not having enough sugar, but a sports dietician says salt is part of the problem.

Sport dietician Gavin Clearkin said he never recommends the SOS Hydration drinks to clients because they do not contain enough carbohydrates for prolonged sports performance, and were “extremely salty”.

SOS Hydration’s formula contains 660mg of sodium, more than twice as much as Gatorade.

The formula was based on the World Health Organisation’s guidelines for Oral Rehydration Solutions.
