Auckland ‘bed tax’ vote may be close, councillor says

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff is confident he will win the first big political test of his mayoralty – but at least one councillor is not so sure.

On Thursday morning Goff’s first budget, the 2017/2018 Annual Plan, gets voted on by the council’s Finance and Performance committee before going to a Governing Body vote expected that afternoon.

A centrepiece is Goff’s proposed bed tax on commercial accommodation providers – a way to raise money to pay for the super city’s booming infrastructure needs, without hitting the ratepayer in the pocket again.
