Budget reveals plans for locks, lights for repeat burglary victims

As many as 14,000 repeat burglary victims will get government support to install extra security at their properties with locks, bolts and security lights.

Burglary has been a hot topic – with stories proliferating of ransacking gone unsolved, leaving Kiwis unsatisfied with police handling of crime.

Police have been under pressure to get this under control and Thursday’s Budget brings some new measures – including Government support for extra security for repeat burglary victims.

It is also trumpeting a prevention strategy targeting young burglars – the Government says under-25s are overwhelmingly the culprits who must be helped early to prevent a lifetime of crime.
