The country’s biggest-ever roading project could finally be open in “the next few weeks”, Finance Minister Steven Joyce says.
The $1.6 billion Waterview Connection was originally set to open in April, but stalled after it was revealed the motorway tunnel’s fire sprinklers and ventilation fans were faulty.
The 2.4km twin-bore tunnel and ring road will connect Auckland’s northwestern and southwestern motorways and is expected to reduce inner-city traffic.
On Thursday, documents obtained from the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) under the Official Information Act redacted the tunnel’s new proposed opening date.
