Last year’s statistics on those caught stealing paints an interesting picture of New Zealand’s average thief.
Data from the New Zealand Police show those caught stealing money or goods were most often young men.
Last year, the highest number of legal proceedings were carried out against men in their 20s, followed by men in their 30s and then women in their 20s.
Nearly 50 court proceedings happened with men between the ages of 20 and 30 who were caught stealing. Over 30 proceedings took place against men in their 30s, and just under 30 proceedings happened to women in their 20s.

Stealing money or goods was a hobby most people seemed to retire from. The number of those caught committing the crime was much diminished after 65.
The only age group in which women were more often caught stealing than men was 55 to 60 years old.
In the past few years one kind of theft in particular has become increasingly common: the theft of beehives.
Apiculture chief executive Karin Kos said the increasing value of New Zealand honey, particularly manuka, had put the commodity on the radar of organised crime.
“Where once there was the odd, isolated regional incident, today we’re seeing theft occur on a wider scale.”
In August, Hastings resident James O’Keefe was caught with $40,000 worth of stolen honey.
In May, after a spate of thefts in the Bay of Plenty, several hundred stolen beehives were recovered by police.
Kos said a single hive can cost $600 to $1000 in set-up and maintenance and with the loss of earnings, the total value of past thefts have been estimated to be in the millions.
“But beehive theft does need to be put into perspective – registered beehive numbers have more than doubled over the last five years,” she said.
Kos estimated the number of hives has gone from 400,000 in 2012 to 800,000 today.
