NZ firms have chance to get in early creating uses for Magic Leap

Magic Leap, a multibillion-dollar startup with strong connections to Google and Wellington’s Weta Workshop, has taken a big step forward.

The Florida company hopes to revolutionise the way people interact with technology with its mixed-reality goggles.

These are designed to blend realistic moving images â€“ including virtual people â€“ that are created using fields of light, into people’s vision.

Magic Leap said it aimed to ship its first device, Magic Leap One, to software developers early next year and has released pictures of what it will look like.

Jessica Manins, director of Wellington’s ProjectR laboratory believed New Zealand firms had a fantastic opportunity to piggyback on Weta Wetashop’s relationship with Magic Leap by developing uses for the Magic Leap One.

Weta Workshop has been developing games for Magic Leap and Weta co-founder Richard Taylor is an investor in Magic Leap and sits on its board.
