More women have a KiwiSaver fund than men do, but they tend to walk away with less in their pockets.
Looking at the Inland Revenue Department’s number of people in KiwiSaver, there are around 50,000 more women than men enrolled. The margin has been pretty consistent since the scheme was founded in 2008.
According to an ANZ white paper published this year, a 25-year-old woman would retire with an estimated $79,000 less in her KiwiSaver than a man.
The reasons behind this gap included women taking time out of the workforce to raise families, and the fact many women earn less.
