Excluding people who are retired, mothers are the largest subset of the population not seeking work and who are out of the labour force.
Statistics show the proportion of stay at home mothers compared with fathers is quite stark.
Last year, about 75,000 women were not seeking employment for the reason of looking after their children, while only about 7000 men were unemployed for the same reason.
Generally Kiwi women were more likely to be not seeking work, however only a very small proportion are unemployed because they didn’t need to work.
