Media Take: National, Labour election adverts failed to fire

The major political parties’ advertising campaigns leading up to the general election were squandered opportunities and unimpressive, political commentators say.

Labour left itself wide open to “mischief-making” from National, political commentator Ben Thomas said on Media Take.

“I actually think National were quite slow off the mark in responding to Jacinda Ardern as the new leader. I don’t think initially they had any means of attacking her or even knowing how to deal with the new circumstances they found themselves in.

“I think over time it became clear that there was this gaping hole in Labour’s platform, which was this blank cheque they were asking for with the tax working group and actually I think commentators and journalists sort of started picking at that before National really spotted the gap and ran in.”
