Alcohol firms are using similar tactics to tobacco companies when it comes to misinforming the public on cancer risks, a study has claimed.
According to new research published in the UK journal Drug and Alcohol Review, nearly 30 alcohol industry organisations around the world, including Australia’s Drinkwise, Molson Coors, Bacardi, Asahi, SABMiller, and Heineken websites misrepresented the evidence about alcohol and cancer.
Breast, bowel, and colon cancers were the most often misrepresented.
Lead author Mark Petticrew, a professor of public health in London, said: “The weight of scientific evidence is clear – drinking alcohol increases the risk of some of the most common forms of cancer.”
