Eden Project could be Christchurch’s equivalent of the Sydney Opera House

The Eden Project planned for Christchurch’s residential red zone is expected to give the city the wow factor it so badly needs.

Lincoln University tourism professor and member of the Eden Project NZ Trust David Simmons said Christchurch needed the major attraction to halt the hemorrhaging of tourists that had occurred post-earthquake.

“Christchurch has lost a lot of ground, particularly to Queenstown. We’ve become a gateway and all that means is that you open the gate, step through it, pick up your campervan, get in it and drive off.”

The concept for the environmental theme park beside the river in the Avon Loop is borrowed from the Eden Project UK in Cornwall, which has assisted with the dramatic new design based on the shape of hinaki, traditional MÄori eel nets.
