Last year’s unemployment figures sparked an on-air quarrel about what new Government spending is available to close the poverty gap for MÄori.
Appearing on RNZ‘s Morning Report, Minister for Employment Willie Jackson told host Guyon Espiner there was still “a heck of a lot of work to be done” to bring down MÄori unemployment.
Espiner told the minister that figures from Statistics NZ showed national unemployment was at 4.5 per cent – the lowest in 10 years – and MÄori unemployment fell by 21.4 per cent.
However, Jackson said the reality was that unemployment for MÄori was still 9 per cent – double the national average.
