Recipe: Sam Mannering’s piccata with grilled radicchio

The concept of taking a bit of meat, bashing it as thin as you can, flouring it and quickly frying it off is bandied around all over Europe. Scaloppine, saltimbocca, schnitzel; cordon bleu, chicken Kiev and so on – I love this sort of thing. I admire places that celebrate such timeless simplicity; Al Brown’s veal schnitzel at The Fed in Auckland is such a thing of joy.

Asset sales, petrol tax and house-building levies to fund Auckland Council’s spending plans

Asset sales, a petrol tax and higher development levies on new homes are all part of the mayor Phil Goff’s plans to fund a huge rise in transport and environment spending.

Auckland Council plans to spend $24 billion to $25b on projects including roading and rail over the 10 years to 2028, a substantial rise in the $18.7b former mayor Len Brown planned to spend in the decade to 2025.

Goff said the plan was necessary to turn Auckland into a world class city, but it comes at a cost to ratepayers, who face new charges and costs designed to raise money while limiting rates rises.

But one of the planned fund-raising plans could make it more expensive to build the new homes Auckland desperately needs.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff’s $24 billion budget for a ‘world class city’

Auckland ratepayers may have to fork out an extra $500 a year to fund mayor Phil Goff’s $24 billion budget.

Goff’s proposed 10-year plan would ditch the $114 Interim Transport Levy. However, annual rate increases, new targeted rates and the fuel tax will overhaul ratepayer savings.

Sticking to the 2.5 per cent annual rate increase would see Auckland’s ratepayers pay an extra $90 in general rates as well as another $88 for wastewater reduction, pest control and fighting kauri dieback in “targeted” rates.

Then there’s the AA’s estimated $135 annual Regional Fuel Tax increase for the average motorist – the net result is by the end of 2018 the average ratepayer will pay an extra $200.
