Customers don’t welcome being baffled or insulted

A marketing stunt by a power company that left customers scratching their heads was a classic example of the bubble many firms floated in, a marketing expert says.

Genesis Energy attached a “cheque” valued at $1.20 – equivalent to an hour’s worth of power during winter – to a recent letter sent out to customers.

But the power company’s gesture proved a turn-off for some users, baffling those who were told the cheque wasn’t intended to be cashed at the bank.

One customer from Tauranga, TJ Stevens-Kameta, said the marketing stunt felt like a prank – so much so that he was considering changing his energy provider.
