Migrant visa crack-down will hurt retirement sector: Summerset

A government crackdown on visas for lower-paid immigrants will hit the retirement sector hard, a major retirement village operator says.

Julian Cook, chief executive of Summerset, said he hoped the Government would reconsider the importance of migrant aged care workers, who make up about a third of Summerset’s 1200-strong workforce.

Visa changes next month would require skilled migrants to make a minimum of $48,859 a year, although a regional backlash against the loss of such workers may change the Government’s mind.

Cook said many of Summerset’s migrant workers were already permanent residents but getting hold of such people in future would be more difficult if the Government held its stance.
