Women in local political bodies are largely under-represented.
Higher up, we’re starting to get more equal representation – in June the Supreme Court sat a majority of women on the bench for the first time in New Zealand history.
But at the local level, it’s mostly men ruling the roost.
City and district councillors are 34 per cent female, while representation on community boards and trusts was slightly higher at 38 per cent.
Regional councils are even more unbalanced, with 24 per cent of elected seats taken by females.
Huggies New Zealand’s reference – since removed – to “a girl’s caregiving instinct” in its potty-training advice might have been labelled as “1950s drivel”, but it could be a stereotype we are buying into subconsciously come election-time.
