Waimea Nurseries is likely to shift its operations from Nelson to the North Island if the proposed Waimea dam doesn’t get the nod, according to one of its directors.
Bruno Simpson, who’s also development manager for the Waimea Plains-based company that employs 75 permanent staff and up to an additional 95 at peak times, spoke directly to Tasman district councillors in support of the dam project.
“Let me be clear that if this dam does not go ahead, the future of our business in this region will be immediately in jeopardy,” Simpson said. “We will act quickly to minimise this risk to our business and would likely move most of our production, jobs and supply spending to the North Island.”
Such a move would be a “devastating outcome” for the Simpson family, who had been in the region since 1850, and the employees “who would, unfortunately, be at great risk of losing jobs”.
