Recipe: Jordan Rondel’s blackberry cake with apricot compote

While berries and stone fruit are at their peak, I can’t resist using them in every which way. The berries in this cake, as well as the apricots are completely interchangeable, so if you prefer raspberries or blueberries, apricots or peaches, try those instead.

Nothing compares with fresh pasta. I’m insisting that you give this a go. Sundays demand this sort of activity. If I had children, I’d forever be distracting them with the pasta machine. Milo’s on-off love affair with health ratings

OPINION: Nestlé has always understood the value of a good story.

And no story is as powerful as linking your product with healthy, happy kids.

That’s been the big push for Milo for generations – think of Milo and images of crunchy brown powder, milk, chocolate moustaches and kids playing sport rise effortlessly up.

This just as effortlessly translates to sales because in the mad rush to do the right thing by their kids, parents have seized on Milo as a drink that will be loved and is also good for them.

Unions decline Fu Wah migrant tradie application, citing exploitation

Unions will tell Immigration New Zealand not to let a Chinese construction company import 174 migrant trades workers after seeing their employment contracts.

E tÅ« spokesman Joe Gallagher said Fu Wah would pay migrant decorators $25 an hour to finish off its $200 million Park Hyatt hotel on Auckland’s waterfront.

The migrants would have to pay for their own travel to and from work, and accommodation costs, while they stayed for the project completion in April 2019.

Gallagher said paying such low wages, and forcing the migrants to deduct living costs from their own pay, was exploitative.

A little over a century ago Dr Henry Pollen set up as a general practitioner in what is still the cutest French Second Empire-style building in Wellington. Sylvia Park expansion leads to hints of new international retailers

The owner of New Zealand’s biggest shopping mall is in talks with international retailers yet to set foot in the country.

The expansion, called The Galleria, will have space for 60 retailers, which will be a mix of national and international retailers.

But while Kiwi Property remains tight-lipped on who might be moving in, retail analyst Chris Wilkinson says it could be anyone from Australia’s controversial lingerie brand Honey Birdette to UK department store Debenhams.

New government accounts show value of NZ environment, and human impact

New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions rose 24 per cent in the 25 years between 1990 and 2015, the first report of a new system of environmental-economic accounts shows.

The new accounts showed the impact of what humans were doing to the natural environment and what was being done to mitigate that, as well as the importance of natural resources to the economy, Statistics New Zealand said.

From 1990 to 2015, total economy real GDP (gross domestic product) increased at a rate of 3.1 per cent a year while carbon dioxide equivalent emissions increased 0.9 per cent a year, driving a decline in greenhouse gas intensity, the report said.

Emissions growth was 0.5 per cent a year for primary industries, 1.2 per cent for goods-producing industries, and 2.2 per cent a year for service industries.

Recipes: Sam Mannering’s stuffed salmon and potato salad

I’m thinking lazy Sunday long lunch with this one. Seriously bucolic. Remarkably simple too. There are a number of ways to approach what is really a very easy recipe. Either keep the salmon whole and fill the cavity with the stuffing mixture, which in preparation terms is a little easier; or to do it as I suggest below, which means you don’t have to worry about bones. Get the fishmonger to fillet and bone the fish for you – it will make things infinitely easier – or just buy two single fillets of salmon: they’re often available whole. Make sure you use good bread – sourdough for the slight tang will combat the richness of the salmon in this case.

NZ First’s future could rest on Shane Jones’ regional development roll-out

OPINION: NZ First’s Shane Jones has a few things to prove when he takes the stage in Gisborne on Friday with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to launch the Government’s $1 billion a year regional development fund.

At a government level, the announcement of the first tranche of projects – worth perhaps $70 million in total – will be an important “proof of life” moment for an administration that has spent a lot of time recently talking about what it will do, and announcing the reviews that will inform its eventual actions.

While it can claim legitimately to have fulfilled its 100-day plan, the impact on average and low-income households is so far only significantly affected by the Families Package which takes effect in July,

The regional development fund is a down payment on the Government’s intention to be a more active economic participant, seeking both to lead and partner in the creation of new economic opportunities – especially in depressed regions where the robust national economic statistics are not borne out on the ground.

Spark to expand Lightbox, may speed up ‘transformation’ after interim profit falls

Spark will beef up its internet television service Lightbox in April by adding on-demand movies and a “premium” option that will let customers watch its TV shows offline when travelling.

The changes to Lightbox will mean its 300,000 subscribers – many of whom get the service free-of-charge with Spark broadband or a mobile plan – and “casual visitors” without a subscription will be able to rent movies online.

Shares in the country’s biggest telecommunications company closed down almost 4 per cent at $3.32 on Wednesday after it reported a small drop in its interim profit and signalled that it might miss its forecast for the full year.

Fletcher Building announces half-year loss of $322 million

Fletcher Building has announced an operating earnings loss of $322 million for the six months ended 31 December 2017.

The loss compares to a $310m profit before significant items for the last six months of 2016.

Earlier this month Fletcher Building flagged its growing losses, and said the board had suspended the payment of an interim dividend.

The expected losses of $660m from the Building & Interiors division (B&I) division led Fletcher Building chairman Sir Ralph Norris to resign, though he will remain in the role until his successor is found.

Time for coffee shops to show tea drinkers some respect – reviewer

New Zealand once led the world in tea drunk per person, so it seems strange tea needs defending in public.

But as tea lover Adelia Hallett puts it, “it’s time to strike back at the coffee culture”.

She’s created a review blog Tea on the Road which rates cafes and tearooms on the cup of tea they serve up. She gives 10 points each for the tea, the cup and the setting.

It’s her way to thank those who get it right and shove the rest in the right direction.
