New Zealand workers’ income is rising, but remains behind many developed countries

New Zealand’s income per capita fell behind behind many other developed countries in the 1980s and has not recovered.

New Zealand’s income per person was slightly below Australia, the United States, and Denmark, but higher than Singapore and Finland before the 1980s.

Fast forward 37 years, and Singapore’s income per capita has risen to US$84,429, more than double that of New Zealand’s US$38,186 per capita.

The United States was also higher at US$57,974, and Australia was at US$49,942.

Spring salads to whip up for a barbie or tasty lunch

By now I suspect that some of you, like me, are longing for some consistently warmer, fine days. I’m more than happy to wait a little longer for Christmas but I am more than ready for summer. These two salads are great as sides at a barbecue, or as simple lunch dishes.

Neat Places: Kaikōura has tasty options for the whole family

An arterial route through the South Island made famous by its stunning vistas and ocean activities, KaikÅura was cut off by an earthquake in November 2016. In the final piece of a two-part feature on the seaside town, Neat Places proves there is still ample reason to visit the coastal gem.

Cadbury owner Mondelez’s results beat expectations as it continues to cut costs

Mondelez International beat Wall Street’s profit and revenue estimates in the third quarter as demand for its key brands such as Oreo cookies and Trident gum rose in Europe and Latin America and the company cut costs.

Shares of the world’s second largest confectionary company rose 4.9 per cent to US$41.20 (NZ$60) in after-market trading on Monday.

Mondelez is closing its Dunedin Cadbury factory next year with the loss of 350 jobs.

Mondelez’s organic revenue, a measure that excludes currency fluctuations, grew 3.2 per cent in Europe and 5.4 per cent in Latin America in the quarter that marks the end of Irene Rosenfeld’s tenure as its chief executive officer.

Women’s groups criticise Auckland Transport over lack of diversity on executive team

Increased gender diversity is needed in Auckland Transport’s (AT) male-dominated executive team, women’s groups say.

International research shows that a more diverse workforce benefits businesses’ bottom-line, and New Zealand’s Ministry for Women says more needs to be done to ensure women move into leadership roles.

Despite this, AT’s executive team, which is the highest level of management and decision making in the council organisation, is made up of nine men and one woman.

In the most recent census data women made up 51 per cent of Auckland’s population.

Restaurant review: Kai Pasifika, Auckland

It’s hard to deny that the food of our Pacific neighbours has had a pretty bad rap in this country, and it’s to the credit of Robert Oliver, the Kiwi-born chef raised in Samoa and Fiji, that he’s doing his bit to show us that Pacific cuisines deserve some respect.

Jonathan Gold shares his thoughts on New Zealand’s food

I sat in the lobby bar of the Intercontinental Wellington nursing a negroni and waiting for Los Angeles Times food writer and columnist Jonathan Gold to join me. That morning I had read an article on Stuff by Sarah Catherall that quoted Gold as saying, “There seems to be a lot of British comfort food, circa 1968”. The thought that an influencer such as Gold might take that opinion of New Zealand food and share it with his global audience played heavily on my mind.

Amisfield chef Vaughan Mabee relishes winter’s end

The snow is lingering longer than Vaughan Mabee cares for. The air is frigid over Lake Hayes and Central Otago’s peaks are still capped. Mabee is tiring of winter – he’s looking forward to find what spring and summer will bring to his ever-changing menu.

The hyper-seasonal food that goes into Mabee’s kitchen at Amisfield, a two-hatted winery bistro located just outside of Queenstown, is limited to a relatively lean list of wild and wintry ingredients. Winter’s menus have been based largely on meat and fish, alongside pickled or fermented vegetables from last season. The animals are sourced by local fishermen, hunters and divers, and the meat is often aged in Amisfield’s downstairs cellar.

While these dishes certainly have been popular, spring and summer herald totally new creations. Some ingredients will be exciting and new to the chef, others he knows will sprout where he last saw them. A lot will come from the restaurant’s garden too.

Mabee is hankering for some asparagus, and he’s anxious to see what the overdue season brings.
