What do Kiwis owe on their student loans?

At least 100,000 Kiwis could wipe off their student loans with one bitcoin.

By June 2017, the majority of tertiary graduates had racked up student loan bills totalling at least $10,000, and many of those had a debt between $10,000 and $14,999; the current worth of one bitcoin is NZ$13,500.

The 2017 Student Loan Scheme annual report showed that since 1992, over 1.2 million Kiwis had taken out a student loan but only just over half had fully paid it off.

Rocket Lab shoots Humanity Star into orbit, annoys astronomers with ‘space graffiti’

Earlier this month, the New Zealand-based private spaceflight company Rocket Lab successfully delivered its first orbital payload. Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket released, along with three commercial satellites, an art installation-as-satellite called the Humanity Star.

The satellite, a highly reflective 65-faced ball crafted of carbon fibre, will orbit Earth for nine months. Around October, its orbit will decay, and the satellite will disintegrate as it descends in the atmosphere.

Until its destruction, the Humanity Star will twinkle so brilliantly it can be witnessed by observers below.

It will be most visible at dawn or dusk, creating an effect Rocket Lab likened on its website to a “bright flashing shooting star”.

Rocket Lab will make life on earth better, no need to move to Mars

Rocket Lab’s plans to drop satellite payloads into low earth orbit every two weeks in 2019 will help to solve society’s biggest problems, an aerospace expert says.

The payloads will look at Earth and track patterns about populations and the environment, said Jim Hefkey, director of the Auckland Programme for Space Systems at the University of Auckland.

Such information could help to solve poverty and pollution, he said, reducing the fear that people would eventually need to shift planets.

”This is where life is generally going to get better. This is the planet we have got and we have got to do our best to maintain it.”

New Zealand seafood festivals to bookmark in 2018

As an island nation, it’s easy to take for granted the abundance and accessibility of food lurking on and beyond our coastline. And yet kaimoana – slimey, briny, chewy, flaky – has sustained human life in New Zealand for as long as we have tread here. Absorbing the ocean in its very fibres, seafood is a hallmark of Kiwi culture. Here are the mustn’t-miss showcases of marine cuisine around the country this year.

Almost one quarter of young males use cannabis outside of work

About a quarter of young men use cannabis for recreational purposes, but it will never be acceptable at work, the Employers and Manufacturers Association boss says.

Kim Campbell said he expected cannabis use among young professionals to be a lot higher than Ministry of Health statistics suggest.

The ministry’s data found that about one quarter of males aged between 15 and 34 used cannabis for recreational purposes last year.

In every age bracket, men’s recreational use of cannabis was higher.

Business confidence drops, with fewer expecting to hire or invest

Business confidence has soured in the wake of the new Labour-led Government, with employers cutting back plans to invest or hire new staff.

The quarterly survey of business opinion (QSBO), the leading survey of its type, showed a net 11 per cent of businesses expect the New Zealand economy to deteriorate over the next six months.

While those covered by the survey were somewhat more upbeat about how their own business would perform over the period, the net 11 per cent expecting an increase in their own activity was the lowest in the QSBO in close to five years.

The net figures represent the difference between the number of businesses which expect conditions to improve in the coming year and those which expect it to deteriorate. A negative score means pessimists outnumber optimists.

Earthquakes usher in new era for steel construction

Christchurch’s earthquake experiences have ushered in a new style of architecture that has influenced construction in Wellington and raised awareness in Auckland.

Steel construction is the biggest and most obvious feature in the city’s buildings – for the cost as well as safety perceptions.

The earthquake rebuild has also changed the relationships between professionals in the sector with early discussions on a project usually beginning with engineers rather than architects.

The construction response to the earthquakes is the subject of a 170-page report by co-authors Michel Bruneau from the University of Buffalo, and Greg MacRae, a professor at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch.
