Recipe: Five-spice pork salad with fresh plum dressing
Plums not only suit sweet dishes, but savoury dishes too, especially those involving pork. Maybe it's the flavour of plums that reminds me of sweet and sour pork. In this recipe I use fresh, ripe, sweet, juicy plums (make sure they're all those things – as the flavour of this dish relies on it) to make a dressing that is tossed with pork fillet coated and cooked in Chinese five spice, and fresh crunchy vegetables for a light summer salad with an Asian twist.

Recipe: Sam Mannering's crumpets
I came across an old crumpet recipe in my notes that turned out to be a total disaster, more like stodgy damper than the spongy deliciousness I was expecting. Fuelled by failure and an unwillingness to be bettered by a breakfast product, I've spent the last few weeks tinkering with various crumpet recipes.

Lynda Hallinan: Listen to sage advice
Her name was Marilyn. She was the science's teacher's wife. She may have had other virtues to qualify her as our country school's career guidance counsellor but if she did, no one ever bothered to spell them out to us. As fifth formers we paid little heed as she shared the scintillating specifics of the jobs we might one day hold: accountant, teacher, lawyer, doctor, nurse, police officer.

Restaurant review: Surfing the Mexican wave
For the hour-and-a half we are at Mexicanos what sounds like the same song plays over the speakers. It's an urgent song in Spanish, a burble in the background.

Five so-called 'naughty' foods that are actually good for you
Sometimes it can be hard to keep up with what's happening in the world of nutrition. Foods are bad, then they're good, then they're back to being demonised again. Here are five foods that have long lingered in the "best avoided" pile, but which are actually packed with health benefits.
